What Problem Does Relay Solve?

Lending organizations face a fragmented operational challenge: identity verification, loan eligibility assessment, mandate collection, repayment scheduling, and transaction tracking are often handled by separate systems with no common integration point.

Relay addresses this by providing a unified API surface that connects each stage of the lending lifecycle. Rather than integrating with multiple services independently, partner organizations can use Relay to handle consent-based identity verification, check loan eligibility, register direct debit mandates, trigger EMI deductions, and retrieve repayment and transaction data — all through a single authenticated integration.

Unified Lending API

Relay consolidates identity consent, eligibility, mandate setup, EMI management, and transaction retrieval into a single API integration, reducing the operational complexity for lending partners.

BVN-Based Identity Consent

Relay's Consent API provides a structured, consent-driven flow for verifying customer BVNs and retrieving verified identity and bank account information before loan processing begins.

Loan Eligibility Assessment

Partners can submit customer and loan details to Relay's eligibility check endpoint and receive a clear eligibility determination before proceeding with loan origination.

Direct Debit Mandate Management

Relay supports the setup of direct debit mandates through NIBSS infrastructure, allowing partners to register signed mandate documents along with customer account and loan details.

Automated EMI Processing

Partners can retrieve pending EMI records and trigger deduction requests against active subscriptions, enabling automated repayment workflows without manual intervention.

Repayment & Transaction Visibility

Relay provides endpoints to retrieve subscription records, EMI schedules, and transaction histories by organization registration number, giving partners a complete view of their loan portfolio activity.

How Relay Works

Relay is designed around the lifecycle of a loan — from the moment a customer's identity is verified, through eligibility assessment and mandate registration, to ongoing repayment processing and reporting.

The typical Relay integration follows a sequential flow, where each stage depends on the successful completion of the previous one. The flow below reflects the standard Relay lending lifecycle.

Step 1

Verify Customer BVN

Call the Verify BVN endpoint with the customer's BVN to initiate the consent flow. The API returns a redirect URL that guides the customer through the consent step.

Step 2

Retrieve BVN Details

After consent is completed, use the session ID from the consent flow to call the BVN Details endpoint and retrieve the verified customer profile and linked bank account information.

Step 3

Check Loan Eligibility

Submit the verified customer details and the proposed loan parameters to the Loan Eligibility Check endpoint. The response returns a clear eligibility determination before loan origination proceeds.

Step 4

Setup Direct Debit Mandate

Register the direct debit authority by uploading the signed mandate document along with the customer's account details and full loan parameters. This establishes the repayment authority through NIBSS.

Step 5

Monitor Mandates & Subscriptions

Use the Get Mandates and Get Subscriptions endpoints to retrieve and monitor the registered mandate and active loan subscription records associated with your organization.

Step 6

Process EMI Deductions

Retrieve pending EMI records for your organization and trigger deductions using the Process EMI Deduction endpoint, specifying the target subscription and EMI schedule IDs.

Step 7

Track & Reconcile

Use the Get Transactions and Get EMI Schedule endpoints to retrieve full transaction history and per-subscription repayment schedules for reconciliation, reporting, and audit purposes.

All Relay API endpoints are available in staging and production environments. Actual endpoint base URLs, credentials, and authentication values are provided through protected partner resources after access is approved.

Relay API Technical Specification

Relay is a web-based REST API built on standard HTTP protocols, with separate staging and production environments hosted under dedicated Relay service domains.

All Relay API operations use POST as the HTTP method and communicate over HTTPS. Request and response payloads are primarily JSON, with multipart/form-data used for the Setup Direct Debit endpoint, which requires a signed mandate document upload alongside structured JSON fields.

REST API

Relay follows REST conventions, providing a consistent request-response model for all lending lifecycle operations.

HTTPS

All communication with Relay endpoints occurs over HTTPS, ensuring data is encrypted in transit between partner systems and Payvala's infrastructure.

POST Method

All Relay operations use HTTP POST, with request parameters passed in the request body or as path parameters where applicable.

JSON

Request and response payloads use JSON format for all standard operations, providing a consistent and parseable data structure across the API.

Multipart / Form-Data

The Setup Direct Debit endpoint uses multipart/form-data to support the upload of a signed mandate PDF alongside structured loan and account details.

Staging & Production Environments

Relay provides separate staging and production base URLs (stage-relay-service.payvala.com and relay-service.payvala.com), with equivalent separation for identity service endpoints.

Path Parameters

The EMI Schedule endpoint uses a SubscriptionId path parameter, enabling direct retrieval of schedule data for a specific subscription without additional request body filtering.

Standard Response Structure

All Relay responses follow a consistent structure containing a numeric response code, boolean status, descriptive message, and a data payload — either an object or array depending on the operation.

Relay Service Endpoints

Relay API operations are hosted across two service domains — the identity service for BVN consent operations, and the relay service for all lending, mandate, EMI, and transaction operations.

Each service domain has a dedicated staging and production base URL. Use the staging environment for all integration development and testing. Production endpoints are used only after the integration has been validated and the production-readiness process is complete.

The staging base URLs are: https://stage-identity-service.payvala.com (Consent APIs) and https://stage-relay-service.payvala.com (Relay APIs). Production base URLs follow the same structure without the stage- prefix. Specific endpoint paths are documented in the protected API documentation available after sign-in.

Authentication

Relay API access uses the authentication mechanism configured for your approved partner integration. Authentication requirements and credential details are provided as part of the partner onboarding and configuration process.

Ensure your application uses the correct credentials for the target environment. Staging and production environments use separate credentials. Do not use production credentials during integration development or testing.

For full authentication requirements applicable to your Relay integration, refer to the Security documentation and the protected credentials provided after partner access is approved.

What You Need Before Integrating Relay

Before requesting Relay access, ensure your organization understands the lending workflows you intend to connect with Payvala and is prepared to provide the required information during onboarding.

The exact authentication, environment, credential, and API-specific configuration requirements applicable to your integration will be confirmed during the onboarding process.

Organization & Registration Details

Be prepared to provide your organization's registration number (RcNumber) and related details, as this identifier is required by most Relay API operations.

Lending Workflow Requirements
